During this the way to avoid contracting the AIDS virus is by using condoms. But the researchers revealed that the tablet and vaginal ring could effectively protect a person from AIDS.
Researchers reported that the vaginal tablet, vaginal ring and the film layer containing a drug to help protect women and men from infection with the AIDS virus.
Such approach is called the microbicide. This possibility may help overcome some of the usual risk of drug resistance arises when someone uses pills to prevent infection.
Several findings have been reported in the International Microbicides Conference in Pittsburgh, as quoted from Reuters, Tuesday (25/05/2010), namely:
1. A flexible vaginal ring
A flexible ring that is designed for use in the vagina can continually just like giving two AIDS drugs for a month. This tool is found by Andrew Loxley from Bethelem, Pennsylvania. These rings are tested in the laboratory to determine the effect of the drug and inhibitor maraviroc dapivirine. However, this tool has not been tested in humans.
2. Vaginal tablets
A vaginal tablet works almost the same as that by releasing vaginal ring drug maraviroc and other HIV drugs called the DS003. These results are found by Sanjay Grag from the University of Auckland in New Zealand. The tablet uses a polymer coating designed to withstand moisture in the vagina.
3. Using a layer (film)
This tool is found based on the results of research Anthony Ham ImQuest BioSciences of Frederick, Maryland. Imquest is HIV drug testing IDP-9528 contained within a small layer and thin, even thinner than a gum strip or similar to mouthwash.
Susan Schader and colleagues from McGill University in Montreal, Canada tells us that people will have drug-resistant infections in microboside when the person is already infected.
Based on data from the United National AIDS (UNAIDS) to the HIV virus has now infected more than 33 million people worldwide and has caused 25 million deaths. In addition more than half of people with HIV are women and most are infected from their husbands or their permanent partner who does not want to use condoms.
Actually, AIDS experts have long been looking for microbicide in the form of creams, gels, or rings that can be used by men or women and serves as a shield to protect themselves from sexual transmission of the deadly virus and this can not be cured.
