Cigarettes are not becoming more rare among men. And to widen its market, women are now also become the main targets of tobacco companies and the tobacco industry to increase the number of new smokers.
On World No Tobacco Day 2010 is commemorated each year on May 31, Board of Health
World (WHO) with the theme 'Gender and tobacco with an emphasis on marketing to women'. It is designed to anticipate the effects of hazards of tobacco marketing, especially for women and young girls.
"Now the tobacco companies targeting women and young girls as their new target markets as well as making it a prime target," said Dr. Soepandi Sp.P Priyanti Z (K), Director of department of Friendship, in a press conference to commemorate World No Tobacco Day (HTTS) in Dr Friendship, Jakarta, Monday (05/31/2010).
According to WHO data, from one billion smokers in the world, as much as 20 percent or about 200 million people are women, and this number will continue to increase if not skeptical.
Data from 151 countries showed that about 7 percent of teenage girls smoking and 12 percent of adolescent boys to smoke. Even in some countries, more girls smoke than boys.
Statistics smokers in Indonesia, when seen from among children and adolescents for 24.1 percent of adolescent boys and four girls, or as a whole amounted to 13.5 percent of Indonesian teenagers are smokers.
Even for the Jakarta area alone, smoking prevelance data from the Demographic Institute at the University of Indonesia in 2008 showed that there were eight percent of women smokers in the capital.
That is, there are 240 thousand women smokers among the three million active smokers in the capital. The number of women smokers in Indonesia rose five times more than men.
According to Dr Priyanti, there is a tendency to increase the number of women smokers, whereas male smokers stable. This is what has digencarkan by cigarette companies, aiming for new goals and make it a prime target.
This is influenced by an unhealthy lifestyle in today's society that affect women more than men.
Lifestyle, such as interactions with fellow smokers and often visit places of entertainment are much visited among smokers, more easily affect women.
Whereas women should be able to combat the habit of smoking husbands or sons. Combating cigarette with the love a mother may become an efficacious manner. But this would be impossible if the mother is also an active smoker.
Can not be avoided anymore, the role of women as family protector from the danger of cigarettes is very important. This is because the role of women as mothers in families of smokers should be able to provide a good example of exemplary behavior, such as health behavior, honesty, fix the problem in a positive way, and always provide positive support for each family member who wants to quit smoking.
Women are the protectors of the family of the cigarettes, and not even follow the habits of her husband and children who smoke.
